Hunting Camp Expectations

As a professional hunting guide in Maine, I often expect to find myself dealing with the seasoned hunter; an individual who has hunted for many years, perhaps made a hunt or two out west or down south, and now is coming further north to hunt for species that have eluded him elsewhere. The seasoned hunterContinue reading “Hunting Camp Expectations”

Posted: The Pandemic Effect

I first noticed it sometime in early spring of 2020. As I turned off Route 6 onto the Bottle Lake Rd in Springfield, my Grand Laker canoe on the hitch and headed to Lower Sysladobsis Lake, I saw a few fresh real estate signs in newly cleared timber lots. Further along, even more. This certainlyContinue reading “Posted: The Pandemic Effect”

Preserve, Protect, Support and Defend

Do those words sound familiar? They should, because they are the foundation of every sworn oath in most federal and state oaths of office. We hear them solemnly delivered every four years as the next President of the United States is sworn in. To be specific, we hear the newly elected or re-elected president sayContinue reading “Preserve, Protect, Support and Defend”

Gun Legislation Rollout

Last month, we talked about the future of gun rights and what to expect coming down the proverbial pipe.  When I wrote that column, I had to rely strictly on the president’s stated platform and existing positions held by current and former anti-gun elected officials and the promises they’ve made to their supporters.. This past year you would have had a better chance of witnessing Sasquatch riding aContinue reading “Behind the Ammunition Shortage”

Lever Guns for Deer

The biggest drawback in the past when hunting with a lever gun has been ammunition.  Most guns used a tubular magazine which meant having to load only round or flat nosed bullets like the .30-30 Win and .45-70 Govt.  That meant decreased ballistic performance and decreased velocity.

The Greatest Gift

I don’t know about you, but for me, December is a time filled with reflection. Life slows down perceptibly for me as the big game seasons come to a close and open water fishing opportunities dwindle to a trickle. Soon, coyote hunting and ice fishing will be the dominant outdoor pursuits. While I do lookContinue reading “The Greatest Gift”

The Musket Myth

Once again it is high tide in the gun control debate. Over the past month and a half, it seems I can barely keep up with wave after wave of assaults on the rocky shores of freedom. Emboldened by tragedy, anti-gun forces at both state and federal levels have renewed attempts at banning semi-automatic modernContinue reading “The Musket Myth”
